Circular economy solutions

Long-term and goal-oriented action is the best form of resource wisdom. Circular economy solutions and their development are one of the areas of expertise in the Resource Wisdom research area.

The circular economy is not just about recycling materials or repairing and reusing goods. It is forward-looking design and long-term action that respects nature and people in the production of both products and services. Once natural resources have been extracted, the aim is to keep them in circulation for as long as possible while generating value for the economy.

The circular economy offers an alternative to the traditional take-make-dispose model and addresses the challenges of today’s overconsumption culture. Operating models for the circular economy include product and material sharing, sharing platforms, rental and leasing services, reuse, repair and refurbishment, and material recycling. The aim is to reduce the amount of waste generated and the need for virgin raw materials. Comprehensive and sustainable design takes into account not only the sustainability of the product or service, but also the surrounding infrastructure and logistics in order to find the best technologically feasible and economical solution.

The circular economy also supports security of supply. For example, products designed to be durable and repairable can be maintained and utilised efficiently even in crisis situations. In addition, the use of recycled materials, such as domestic recycled fertilisers, reduces dependence on imported raw materials and strengthens self-sufficiency.

The circular economy offers companies new business models, improves operational resource efficiency and provides a competitive advantage in markets where sustainability requirements are increasing. However, it is advisable to start with small steps, as the circular economy cannot be adopted overnight or built alone. Successful development requires collaboration, multidisciplinary expertise, and a willingness to experiment.

In Resource Wisdom research area, we offer expert assistance in circular economy matters to a wide range of industries.
